The article you forwarded was interesting. The Human Genotype Project started by The National Geographic will give us some truly scientific insights into the Islands inhabitants. A member of a 'pure' Sinhalese family with aristocratic feudal lineage, resident in Avissawella, had his genes analysed and matched. He had a close match in South America and thus came to know of his strong Portuguese lineage. It is high time that we think of humanity as one and all of us as descendants of the original 'African Eve'. In our long migrations over planet earth, all of us have lost some genes and mutated others. I would like you to go to this site and get your buccal mucosa analysed for maternal and paternal genetic identification. A kit is under US Dollars Hundred for each.

If all of us who can afford it do this there will be a large database to work on. Please cut and paste the address on your web browser to see the details. Go through the other sections on Human Migrations etc. and you will see how peurile it is to talk of Sinhalese or Tamil or for that matter blacks, yellows and whites. The so called 'Aryan migration' to India from the Central Asian Steppes does not stand up to DNA analysis. So where does the 'Aryan migration' of Paranavitharana and Mendis lead us. It was a mirage which divided us and brought so much misery to this land.

I'd like to know of any batchmate who has a bigger genetic mix ( or mix up ) than me. I have Scottish, Irish, Dutch, Portugese, Hungarian and Chinese in me. The Chinaman had a Japanese name and therefore could have been a Japanese living in Hong Kong. I am pleased to say my children have at least two more countries in them and my grandchildren at least a further two.

Rat snake

I met a driver working on a power project being constructed by the Chinese in Sri Lanka, close to Colombo. He said that a large Rat-snake ('Garandiya - S, Chaarai - T) appeared, apparently looking for rats inside a container. The Chinese got very excited and cornered it and killed it. They subsequently cooked it and ate it with much relish. I wonder how long it will take for the locals to follow suit. In no time the Rat-snake will be an endangered species in Sri Lanka.

Dear Philip
Sidney and I were really saddened to hear the news of Pathi's demise. We knew her well at Medical School and Panch of course was in many of our groups. We met Pathi and Panch in 1979 in the USA. We were staying with our cousin, Selvarani and Mahesan Richards, and the very first morning after our arrival Punch and Pathi arrived around 7am to meet us. We had a lovely meal with them in their beautiful home and it was such a warm and happy reunion. We met Panch and Pathi again at Sevarani's daughter's wedding in 2005 when our friendship was once again rekindled. We could see how bravely Pathi was coping with her illness. She was always gentle, loving and caring. As we are a couple within the batch we identified so much with them in so many ways. Pathi's contribution to pathology I am told by Selvarani has been outstanding. She has been voted the best teacher at the University and has won this acolade for many years running. Her contribution to her chosen field and to educating medical students will live on.
We think of Panch and the family at this time and pray that they will find comfort and solace in the many decades they have shared together and the memories that Pathi has left behind. We pray for them at this time.

" Some martians landed on earth in Warminster in UK. They got friendly with an earth couple. The female on earth wanted to know how they produce young ones on Mars. The Martians obliged. They showed a machine where they did the fertilisation, incubation and weaning. Then the Martians asked the earth couple, how they did it on earth. The couple obliged and the curious martians watched the whole proceeding. At the end of it they asked where is the young earthling? They were told that it would take nine months for that. Sad to hear of Pathmini's demise. Our heart felt condolences to her family. I too remember her smiling and kind face.

2. Pathi was one of my closest friends at Methodist College & we had such fun together.

During our Faculty days we used to make a dash for lunch (chatting all the way) - she to her home & I to my cousin's who lived opposite her home.

Afterwards too she was a great friend to both Daya & me.

Sadly we lost touch after she left for the States but we did have a couple of chats over the phone. I can vouch for the sentiments expressed by Chandran that she was indeed a wonderfully kind & generous person - very loving & lovable & a good friend.

Our deepest sympathies to Panch & the rest of her family.
