The Seekers are an Australian folk-influenced pop quartet, originally formed in Melbourne in
1962. They were the first Australian pop music group to achieve major chart and
sales success in the United Kingdom and the United States. They were popular during the
1960s with their best-known configuration as: Judith Durham on vocals, piano andtambourine; Athol Guy on double bass and
vocals; Keith Potger on twelve-string guitar, banjo and vocals; and Bruce Woodley on guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals.
The group had Top 10 hits
in the 1960s with "I'll Never Find
Another You", "A World of Our Own",
"Morningtown Ride",
"Someday, One Day"
(written by Paul Simon), "Georgy Girl"
(the title song of the film of the same name), and "The Carnival is Over"
by Tom Springfield, the last being an adaptation
of the Russian folk
song "Stenka Razin".
The Seekers have sung it at various closing ceremonies in Australia, including World Expo 88 and the Paralympics.
It is still one of the top 50 best-selling singles in the UK. Australian music
historian Ian McFarlane described their style as
"concentrated on a bright, uptempo sound, although they were too pop to be
considered strictly folk and too folk to be rock."
In 1968, they were
named as joint "Australians of the
Year" – the only group thus honoured. In July of that year,
Durham left to pursue a solo career and the group disbanded. The band has
reformed periodically, and in 1995 they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. "I'll Never Find
Another You" was added to the National
Film and Sound Archive of
Australia's Sounds of Australia registry in 2011. Woodley's and Dobe
Newton's song "I Am Australian",
which was recorded by the Seekers, and by Durham with Russell Hitchcock and Mandawuy Yunupingu,
has become an unofficial Australian anthem. With "I'll Never Find Another
You" and "Georgy Girl", the band also achieved success in the
United States, but not nearly at the same level as in the rest of the world. As
of 2004, the Seekers have sold over 50 million records worldwide.
The Seekers were
individually honoured, in the Queen's Birthday Honours, as Officers of the Order of
Australiarecipients, in June, 2014.[1]

Danny Kaye
was one of the most popular entertainers in the United States and England
during the 1940s and '50s, thanks largely to a string of successful films that
showcased his witty song-and-dance routines. Kaye worked on Broadway, having
success in the early '40s with Lady in the Dark. Audiences loved his energy and clever
wit and he was a popular stage performer during World War II, frequently
working with material written by his wife, lyricist Sylvia Fine. He made more
than a dozen popular movies, including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), The Inspector General(1959)
and The Court Jester (1956). For years Kaye was a spokesman
for the United Nation's Children's Fund, and in 1954 he was awarded a special
Oscar for his humanitarian efforts. During the '60s he was on TV, the star of The Danny Kaye Show (1963-67), but his style of
entertainment was no longer the rage and his popularity waned. His last
performance on screen was for the television movie Skokie (1981).

Mary Ann Kappelhoff, April 3, 1922 or 1924)[1] is an American actress, singer, and
animal rights activist.
Day began
her career as a big band singer in 1939. Her popularity began to rise after her
first hit recording, "Sentimental Journey", in 1945. After
leaving Les Brown & His Band of Renown to try a solo career, she started her
long-lasting partnership with Columbia Records, which would remain her only
recording label. The contract lasted from 1947 to 1967, and included more than
650 recordings, making Day one of the most popular and acclaimed singers of the
20th century. In 1948, after being persuaded by Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne and
her agent at the time, Al Levy, she auditioned for Michael Curtiz, which led to her being cast as
the female lead inRomance on the High Seas.
Over the
course of her career, Day appeared in 39 films. She was ranked the biggest
box-office star, the only woman on that list, for four years (1960, 1962, 1963
and 1964) ranking in the top 10 for ten years (1951–1952 and 1959–1966). She
became the top-ranking female box-office star of all time and is currently
ranked sixth among the top 10 box office performers (male and female), as of
2012.[2] She received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Pillow Talk, won three Henrietta Awards
(World Film Favorite), received the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement
Award and, in 1989,
received theCecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion
pictures. Day made her last film in 1968.
Day has
released 31 albums, and her songs have spent a total of 460 weeks in the Top 40
charts.[3] She has been awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 2011, she released her
29th studio album, My Heart, which debuted at No. 9 on the UK
Top 40 charts. As of January 2014, Day is the oldest living artist to score a
UK Top 10 with an album featuring new material.
Her strong
commitment to animal welfare began in 1971, when she co-founded "Actors
and Others for Animals". She started her own non-profit organization in
the late 1970s, the Doris Day Animal Foundation and, later, the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL). Establishing the annual
observance Spay Day USA in
1994, the Doris Day Animal League now partners with The Humane Society of the United States and continues to be a leading advocacy
organization. In 2004, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush in recognition of her distinguished
service to the country. Day is retired from acting and performing, but has
continued her work in animal rights causes and animal welfare.
