emails re 'Remembrance'
1. Dear Phillip,
Honouring our departed colleagues by remembering , acknowledging and expressing grief
in a discreet and appropropriate yet pragmatic manner, is necessary,
at what may well be a final meetup.
The Armed forces of all countries do it regularly. In many different ways depending on the occasion!
Usually, a lone soldier and a plaque with all the names of the departed , a bugler playing the "Last Post" are prominent icons in such a ceremony.
We could have,
1. A computer screen with all the names projected on the back of the stage
and Scrolled during the period of silence.
The names are probably all in someone's computer .
2. a candle lit,
3. 2 minutes silence observed
in remembrance of all our departed batchmates
seems to be a pragmatic yet elegant solution .
Dining in a Mausoleum would be to risk indigestion!
Submitted with deep respect for our departed colleagues!
Regards
Dawood
2. I do agree with the sentiments expressed by Sidney, Daya, Nalini & Kamalini.
Most of us (I believe) will appreciate the opportunity to remember those batch mates who passed away, and to show our respect and gratitude at the Get Together.
It may not be easy to get a consensus as to how this could be done in the best possible way within the short period of our Get together (with such a busy schedule).
The organising committee has so far taken so much of efforts to make the Get together a real success.
I suggest that the organising committee delegate to one or two members to read out the names ( 42 names so far with the addition of Dr K.A.J Anton Fernando as the latest) - preferably starting from 1960/61 and we all stand in silence for 2-3 minutes at the end.
I am aware that the attendance for any of the programmes planned is not compulsory but most of us would very likely wish to participate in this somber event.
Regards
Nana

Hi Batchmates
I feel it is better to have a poster with photograph and write up on an A4 size paper for each departed batch mate giving a short note on the deceased person. All should be uniform on Font size 14, arial.
Everyone can read at leisure
In addition we can read out the names and observe 3 minutes silence in memory of all.

emails re subject 'Remembrance'
Hi Batchmates
Please treat this as a personal reflection to which I have given much thought
The remembrance of the departed batch mates is of importance and I agree that it should from an integral part of our reunion. The form should be dignfied and proportionate.
As suggested a three minute remenbrance of each deceased individual has many flaws. The first is the length of time - nearly two hours. Subjecting participants to such an emotive period of response could have a serious negative influence on the whole proceedure.
I have two proposals:
Roll Call : 1. Each name called out - ( just the name) by a friend.
2. Each name called out by a friend with the year or date of death - this emphesising the time spread of rememberance (fron entry to date).
This proposal will time limit the period of rememberance and spare us of the agony of a prolonged period of recall that could be very painful.
I hope we could give due regard to this. Equally I would be happy to recall a batchmate or two as proposed.
With best wishes

Subject: Remembering departed
Dear Sarath & Phillip,
This is the second one to say its too long. I guess the long time is true though how remembrance after so long can be painful I cant imagine!
Maybe as a compromise we should make it one minute per person.
I think one thing we also have to stress is that people are free to spend the time as they want - go out & have chat sessions, do trips, whatever. & attendance at any of the planned events is not compulsory.
Nalini
The total length of time is the problem. Call the name, and may be light a candle each.
Daya jayasinghe.
Sidney,
Thanks for expressing your thoughts. I will agree with you three minutes is a very long time, it will be impossible to keep our concentration. It will totally loose its meaning.

email from Nalini
Dear all,
We have a collection of 50 BNFs in London which need to be transported across to SL - the new ones for the library & old ones to be given to students.
Please can any of you help in some way to get them across?
I know your bags will be full with gifts when coming to SL - but do let me know if you can find room at least for a few.
If anyone is sending any stuff by sea that would be the best bet. Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Nalini.
