Herbs That Can Give A Memory Boost!

 emaiol from Muttuvelu Maheswaran

Occasional forgetfulness or loss of short-term memory may indicate specific factors and causes, which may be attributed to alcohol, tobacco, certain medications, sleeplessness, stress and depression, nutritional deficiency, head injury or even a stroke.

It is normal to forget things once in a while; but forgetting how to use the telephone or how to find your way home may indicate a more serious memory problem.
So, whether it's to prevent or treat memory loss, these natural herbs have served the mankind time  immemorial.  Let's take a look:

1. Gingko Biloba
This popular herb is well-known for its many therapeutic benefits, particularly its power to enhance memory.

Studies done on this herbal supplement have found gingko's potency in aiding memory and thinking power among people with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia.
Gingko protect the nerve cells damaged by these disorders to improve learning, daily activities, social behavior, as well as reduce feelings of depression.
Further tests conducted on gingko also have found that it can improve blood circulation along the central nervous system, promoting brain development and functioning.

What makes gingko so potent? Gingko leaves contain flavonoids and terpenoids, both of which have antioxidants to combat free radicals that contribute to health of disorders like Alzheimer's and dementia.

2. Ginseng.
Studies have found ginseng to yield promising results when used to treat for memory impairment.
In the studies conducted, mice were given dosages of ginseng extracts showed remarkable improvements in water maze tasks.
Ginseng was shown to activate neurotransmitter activities that promote memory enhancement.

3. Rosemary.
Traditionally, this aromatic herb has long been used to improve memory. Like gingko, rosemary has been shown to contain antioxidants that neutralize free radicals.
When used in aromatherapy, rosemary has also been found to reduce cortisol levels in the brain, thereby reducing anxiety.
Further, when combined with other essential oils, rosemary has been shown to alleviate stress and increase concentration and memory of graduate nursing students.

4. Sage.
Studies have found that sage contains active ingredients that boost the chemicals that trigger transmission of messages within the brain.
Scientists from the Universities of Newcastle and Northambria also tested the herb on 44 people. Half the group were given sage, while the other half were given a placebo.
Results showed that those who were given sage performed better in a word recall test.

5. Green Tea.
Green tea is best known for its antioxidant properties. Scientific research conducted in March 2013, confirmed that green tea extracts help shield proteins and lipids (fat soluble vitamins: A, D, E and K) from age associated activities caused by oxidation. In the study, animals treated with green tea extracts showed better spatial learning abilities.
Further, studies suggest that this plant can protect the hippocampus (the part of the brain responsible for emotion, memory and the autonomic nervous system) from age-related decline.

6. Rhodiola Rosea.
Rhodiola Rosea has long been used to treat various kinds of illnesses.
But, rhodiola is best known for enhancing memory. In fact, it is considered to be one of the best herbs to do so. Studies have also discovered that rhodiola not only has the ability to improve one's focus and memory, it can also relieve depression. Furthermore, researchers believe that this herb containsadaptogenic qualities which stimulate the central nervous system of the body, resulting in enhanced memory and concentration. Another study also found that taking rhodiola regularly increases memorization abilities.

7. Bacopa.
Bacopa has a long history. It was used inayurveda (a 5000-year-old ancient system of natural healing) to enhance learning, concentration and memory.
Numerous studies conducted on bacopa found it to be an effective herb in improving one's memory and mental function. In one study, conducted in Australia, 46 volunteers aging from 18 to 60 were divided into two groups. In one group, each volunteer was given 300mg ofbacopa everyday. After 12 weeks, the subjects' verbal learning abilities, speed of information processing, and memory significantly improved.

8. Gotu Kola.
Gotu Kola shows promising results in enhancing memory and improving brain function. In traditional Chinese and ayurvedicmedicine, gotu kola has also been used in rejuvenating the mind and the body. In fact, it is considered to be an anti-aging herb. Studies have found that gotu kola contains certain substances that increase brain power and improves blood circulation to the brain, resulting in better memory, concentration, intelligence and attention span.

9. Periwinkle.
This herb is best known for its antispasmodic, antibacterial, anti-cancer and sedative effects. It is also a great herb to use to enhance memory. The seeds and leaves in periwinkle contain a blood thinner that improves circulation of the blood to the brain, promoting better oxygen use. It also prevents any damages to the blood vessels, preventing dementia and senility. Furthermore, it encourages the brain to absorb more nutrients, significantly improving its functions. By increasing oxygen supply to the brain, cognitive and memory abilities are significantly enhanced.

10. Blueberries.
Modern science has discovered that blueberries contain powerful compounds like flavanoids, believed to be effective in enhancing learning ability, cognitive functions, verbal comprehension, numerical ability, decision making, reasoning ability, and more importantly, memory. Eating foods rich inflavanoids regularly, helps in slowing down the decline in cognitive ability, offering protection against diseases like dementia, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Moreover, a study conducted at Harvard University found that eating blueberries helps in boosting brain power. It has also been found to stave off cognitive decline and prevent memory loss, that is normally associated with aging.

Growing old

 email from Milroy De Silva

THIS MESSAGE IS WORTH READING EVERY DAY WHEN YOU REACH YOUR AGE!
Don't delete this one; you'll laugh when you see  the return message.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra biscuit, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my balcony. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50 & 60's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love..... I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get  old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face.

So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So,  to  answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become.  I am not going to live forever, but while  I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be.  And I shall  eat dessert every single day  (if I feel like it).

MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COME APART, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S STRAIGHT OM THE  HEART!

Forward this to at least 7 people and see what happens on your screen. You will laugh your head off!!!!!!!!!!!

Or note many of these things do nothing, fingers crossed

Steve Jobs' Last Words

email from Kamalini Kanapathippillai
"I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In others' eyes, my life is an epitome of success. However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to.

At this moment, lying on the sick bed and recalling my whole life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in, have paled and become meaningless in the face of impending death.

In the darkness, I look at the green lights from the life supporting machines and hear the humming mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of god of death drawing closer ... Now I know, when we have accumulated sufficient wealth to last our lifetime, we should pursue other matters that are unrelated to wealth ... Should be something that is more important:
Perhaps relationships, perhaps art, perhaps a dream from younger days.

Non-stop pursuing of wealth will only turn a person into a twisted being, just like me.
God gave us the senses to let us feel the love in everyone’s heart, not the illusions brought about by wealth. The wealth I have won in my life I cannot bring with me. What I can bring is only the memories precipitated by love. That's the true riches which will follow you, accompany you, giving you strength and light to go on.

Love can travel a thousand miles. Life has no limit. Go where you want to go. Reach the height you want to reach. It is all in your heart and in your hands.

What is the most expensive bed in the world? Sick bed ... You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you. Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost — Life.

When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading — Book of Healthy Life. Whichever stage in life we are at right now, with time, we will face the day when the curtain comes down.

Treasure Love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat yourself well. Cherish others."
