A Golf Story

Email from JKS Weerasekera

Subject: Fwd: A Golf StoryHappy ending one.

STAN   who lived in the north of England, decided to go golfing in Scotland with his buddy, Shawn.

So they loaded up John's minivan and headed north. After driving for a few hours, they got caught in a terrible blizzard. So they pulled into a nearby farm and asked the attractive lady who answered the door if they could spend the night.

‘I realize it's terrible weather out there and I have this huge house all to myself, but I'm recently widowed,' she explained, 'and I'm afraid the neighbours will talk if I let you stay in my house.'

'Don't worry,' John said. 'We'll be happy to sleep in the barn. And if the weather breaks, we'll be gone at first light.'

The lady agreed, and the two men found their way to the barn and settled in for the night.

Come morning, the weather had cleared, and they got on their way. They enjoyed a great weekend of golf.  But about nine months later, John got an unexpected letter from an attorney. It took him a few minutes to figure it out, but he finally determined that it was from the attorney of that attractive widow he had met on the golf weekend.

He dropped in on his friend Shawn and asked, "Shawn, do you remember that good-looking widow from the farm we stayed at on our golf holiday in Scotland about 9 months ago?'

  ‘Yes, I do,' said Shawn

'Did you, er, happen to get up in the middle of the night, go up to the house and pay her a visit?'

'Well, um, yes!,' Shawn said, a little embarrassed about being found out, 'I have to admit that I did.'

'And did you happen to give her my name instead of telling her your name?'

Shawn's face turned beet red and he said, 'Yeah, look, I'm sorry, buddy. I'm afraid I did.  Why do you ask?'

‘She just died and left me everything.'

(And you thought the ending would be different, didn't you?...)

I will not apologize!

The Paris attacks that killed 130 people and injured hundreds of others are still capturing headlines.
They also occupy the top spot in social media the world over.

The attack came days after suicide bombers blew up about 40 people in a Beirut suburb and before that a Russian plane was blown up over Sinai killing more than 200 people. Daesh (the self-proclaimed IS) took responsibility for all of these murderous acts.

I received several phone calls from Western journalists asking for the Saudi point of view on these murderous attacks to which my reply was that all of us condemn these inhumane and ugly acts which do not serve any purpose, but on the contrary malign our society and our religion.

One caller asked if we will apologize. I almost screamed at him. Apologize for what?! Are we responsible for the actions of mysterious groups that destroy and kill?

Are we responsible for all the evil acts being committed and falsely attributed to Islam?! I am not going to apologize, I said.

Let an international investigation be conducted and the findings made public. I am not a believer in conspiracy theories, but since the 9/11 attack until now many questions remain unanswered.

How is it that after every major incident a passport is found intact?
As if people walk the streets with their passports in their pockets and the passports are made of nonflammable material that is resistant to fires and bomb attacks.

In New York, it was a Saudi passport; in Paris it was a Syrian passport which later was found to be a fake and there were 11 passports with the same name and number!

We have had enough of preachers of hate and ignorant politicians inciting animosity against Muslims and ranting anti-Islamic rhetoric that is racist and full of hate.

Enough of ignorant people going on the rampage uttering jingoistic chants forgetting the complicity of their own governments in creating Al-Qaeda and Daesh-like organizations and propping up dictatorships in the region, dismantling armies and social order and creating vacuum that led to strife.

I stand with the entire world in condemning the wanton, ruthless and mindless destruction of innocent human lives, but please do not ask me to apologize for something for which I am not responsible.

#
Have the Jews apologized for Netanyahu’s daily massacre of Palestinians?
#
Has the Dalai Lama and Aung San Suu Kyi apologized for the brutal holocaust inflicted on the Muslims of Myanmar?
#
Has Indian Prime Minister Modi apologized for the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat or the lynching of people alleged to have eaten beef?
#
Have Bush, Blair, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz and Bremer apologized for the death of a million Iraqis?

While the world rises up in arms against the cowardly murders of the innocent in Paris, no one protested when over a 100 Turks were blown to bits by Daesh in Ankara.

This selective grief is not palatable to me and to many around the world.
These acts are carried out by people
who are supposedly Muslims, but are mostly managed by shadowy groups operating under the umbrella of Western agencies.

They do not represent us.
I am not guilty, and therefore,
I will not apologize!

Shobana Vignesh, singer, Carnatic music.

Carnatic Music - Theeradha Vilaiyattu - Shobana Vignesh (Mahanadhi Shobana)

Hailed as a prodigy, Shobana Vignesh is considered one of the leading performing and recording Carnatic musicians in India. She is fondly known as 'Mahanadhi' Shobana due to her stint as a child actor and singer in the National award winning movie 'Mahanadhi.' Schooled in Carnatic Music by stalwarts like Sri. P.S. Narayanaswamy, Prof. T.R. Subramaniam and Sri. Swamimalai Janakiraman, Shobana had stunned thousands with her prodigious talent by the time she touched her teens. She made her recording debut at the tender age of 11 and since then has released more than 140 albums ranging over 1500 songs in various Indian languages. Shobana is one of the youngest Carnatic Singers to have clinched the Doctoral Degree in Music.
Self-involvement and a sense of total commitment are the prerequisites for being a classical musician. Mahanadhi Dr Shobana Vignesh, who developed under maestro PS Narayanaswamy, gave a totally involved recital at Kapali Fine Arts. While she brought out the essence of the kriti (Sri Krishnam Bhaja) of Dikshitar in raga Todi, set to two kalai and with a detailed alapana, niraval and kalpana swaras, for the charanam Shamka Chakra, it revealed the singer's sensitive predilection to communicate the raga Swaroopa, strictly within the moorings of classicism and never wanting to dabble with superficial glitz.
The New Indian Express, January 16th, 2013
As an internationally renowned artist, Shobana has performed in several parts of India, United States, Singapore, Malaysia and Srilanka. She is often featured by leading Television channels in India and other countries and has been performing concerts for the past 2 decades. With the unique rendition of traditional and time-honored Carnatic music pieces and popular numbers from her albums, Shobana enthralls her audience with her rich and mellifluous voice. Her crystal clear diction and high aesthetic delivery highlight the emotive and expressive quality of South Indian Classical music and add a very significant facet to her performances leaving audiences spellbound. Apart from being a leading performing artist, Shobana holds a Doctorate in Music and has several music publications to her credit and two of them have been adapted as book chapters. She also holds three Masters Degrees in Music and Mass Communication and Journalism. Her lecture demonstrations on Carnatic Classical Music are well received and she captures her audience with her in-depth knowledge in the field and her practical experience as a performer.

Carnatic music

Carnatic musicKarnāṭaka saṃgīta or Karnāṭaka saṅgītam is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its area roughly confined to four modern states of IndiaAndhra Pradesh,KarnatakaKerala, and Tamil Nadu. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancientHindu traditions, the other subgenre being Hindustani music, which emerged as a distinct form because of Persian and Islamic influences in northern India. The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gāyaki (singing) style.
Although there are stylistic differences, the basic elements of śruti (the relative musical pitch), swara (the musical sound of a single note), rāga (the mode or melodic formulæ), and tala (the rhythmic cycles) form the foundation of improvisation and composition in both Carnatic and Hindustani music. Although improvisation plays an important role, Carnatic music is mainly sung through compositions, especially the kriti (or kirtanam) – a form developed between the 14th and 20th centuries by composers such as Purandara Dasa and the Trinity of Carnatic music. Carnatic music is also usually taught and learned through compositions.
Carnatic music is usually performed by a small ensemble of musicians, consisting of a principal performer (usually a vocalist), a melodic accompaniment (usually a violin), a rhythm accompaniment (usually a mridangam), and a tambura, which acts as a drone throughout the performance. Other typical instruments used in performances may include theghatamkanjiramorsingvenu flute, veena, and chitraveena. The most outstanding performances, and the greatest concentration of Carnatic musicians, are to be found in the city of Chennai.[1] Various festivals are held throughout India and abroad which mainly consist of Carnatic music performances, such as the Madras Music Season, which has been considered to be one of the world's largest cultural events.[2][3]

Wannakuwatta Waduge Don Albert Perera (Sinhaleseවන්නකුවත්ත වඩුගේ දොන් ඇල්බට් පෙරෙරා; born 5 December 1927 in Koralwella, MoratuwaBritish Ceylon) better known by his adopted name Amaradeva is a Sri Lankan vocalist, violinist and composer. Primarily using traditional instruments like sitars, tablas and harmoniums, Amaradeva incorporates Sinhala folk music with Indian ragas in his work. Many consider Pandit Amaradeva’s contribution to the development of Sinhala music as unmatched.[1][2][3]
In the mid-1950s, Amaradeva in his Janagayana project consulted experts of the Kandyan dance tradition like Pani Bharata, Kiriganita, Gunamala, Ukkuva and Suramba in his path to understand what constituted Sinhala folk music. Noting that it mostly revolved around a single melody, he decided to add verses that would lead up to the central melody which would now be a chorus thus forming two parts (unseen earlier in traditional Sri Lankan music) removing restrictions that had existed earlier. In doing so, Amaradeva created a uniquely Sinhalese music style that stayed true to folk tradition while incorporating outside influences. His work was vital in the creation of the sarala gee genre practised subsequently by artists like Victor RatnayakeSunil Edirisinghe and Sanath Nandasiri.[4][5]
Pandit Amaradeva has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Philippine Ramon Magsaysay Award(2001), Indian Padma Sri Award (2002)[6] and Sri Lankan "President's Award of Kala Keerthi" (1986) and DeshamanyaAward (1998). In 2003 the French government awarded him the prestigious honour; Chevalier. Notably he still remains the most popular artist as confirmed by Nielsen Media Research findings[4][7] He has also represented Sri Lanka in many forums including the UNESCO 1967 Manila Symposium.
In 1972, Pandit Amaradeva composed the music for the Maldivian National Anthem (Gaumii salaam) at the request of Maldivian Government.
