‘Nerthanjali’, Town Hall, Avissawella, Sri Lanka. DDD 3771 Nayyandi vannama Kuweni.

'Kuweni' was a Queen of the mythical Yaksha clan of Sri Lanka. When the outlawed Prince Vijaya arrived from Lala in India, he was enchanted by Kuweni and took her to wife. Kuweni betrayed her own clan to Prince Vijaya, who defeated the Yaksha clan in battle. Vijaya wanted to marry a Princess of royal lineage, from South India and threw Kuweni out of his house. The heart broken Kuweni returns with her children, to seek succor with her clan. The angry Yaksha clan turns on her and kills her. The children are spared and according to legend become the 'Veddhas' - the aboriginal tribes of Sri Lanka.

This dance sequence relives the Queen Kuweni's last moments.
It is titled ' Kuwenige vilaapaya' - 'The wail of Kuweni'

Dancers at a wedding in Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

Weddings in Sri Lanka are now held more and more in hotels. The 'Poruwa' ceremony is followed by performances by professionally trained dancers. Liquor is served and is followed by a dinner. It costs quite a packet.

Senarathne and better half, Avissawella, Sri Lanka.

'Sena' did his internship in Kandy and progressed to General Practice in Polonnaruwa. Went to the UK and qualified in Psychiatry. Was appointed Consultant Psychiatrist Kurunegala. He thought it was a better life in the University Peradeniya in the Medical Faculty as it was closer home. He emigrated to Australia and is still in active practice as Psychiatrist in Australia. Seeing the photo I took when he visited me in Oct 2012 he has not changed much. The same grin is still there. His better half has the ever smiling face.

'Kalu Nana's visit to Avissawella.

'Kalu Nana', his wife, and his cousin, dropped in at my residence in Avissawella. We had a rollicking time recalling old times. Above are some photos taken at that time.
