email from Dulcie Arulanandam - Dharmaraj

Dear friends of 1960 Batch,I was terribly sorry to miss out on this Get-together which I was looking forward to so much.My husband and I were supposed to attend the celebrations.Unfortunately my husband had to suddenly undergo Cholecystectomy a week before the get-together so I deemed it wise not to travel around at this juncture. As I had'nt seen any of the batch mates other than Anula and Vijitha Nikapota and Leeda in this interim 50 years, I am sure I would'nt have recognised any of them if I had met them on the street ! So it was good to see atleast how they are now in the picture sent through email. All who managed to attend the get-together are truly lucky. I can't get over this lost opportunity to meet all those of the 1960 batch who attended this event. All of you are in my thoughts. Wish you all the best of health and happiness for the future.Hearty congratulations to all those who were involved in organising this event.
Love and God Bless,
Dulcie Dharmaraj nee Arulanandam

Please forward to Derrick.
A great picture of both of you,
Thanks,
Let us find a way to meet here,
Derrick you are only 7 hrs away non stop from Frankfurt
Others are various distances away,
Still most welcome,
Its is a beautiful part of the world,
A bit of every place on earth is well represented,
Can travel thousands of miles, drive for days, with no border crossings[except some police hat as a job control the speed, but overally they are mostly good guys, have met thousands of them,in official capacity etc,
Leaft me with much admiration for the vast majority[some rotten apples at times highlights headlines,,but still the credit remains]

I was too affected by my loss, and has to do much of the work we shared,
And she helps still, with all the good memories and her devotion during these long years.

Phillip, please convey to Wedishghes, that my share th 30,000 to complete the suvenior,
Is with me[I really have cash in RS]
Or it can be sent to the account[if I fail to get someone to deliver it in Colombo or kandy[can do it via my close relatives wither Mr Harilal wickremaratna or Pol Wikka, our famous other lawyer ,in kandy.

Derrick you look great, wife really compliments you.

With very kind regards

A tale by Raja Wannakukorale

Raja Wannakukorala and Kalu Nana among others were having a chat round the dinner table after the Scientific sessions at the Habarana Get together. Kalu Nana had said at the lecture that he was serving in a hospital at Grantham, the birth place of Sir Isaac Newton.
Wannaku said that one day in the past Mr.Newton had come to the hospital where Nana was serving as DMO because he had a bruise on his head, caused by a falling apple while he was seated in his garden. Nana had examined the bruise and suggested an Xray. Newton had protested saying that it was a simple matter and that he wanted to go home. Nana had said Mr.Newton, this is a serious matter, you do not seem to understand the gravity of the situation. Newton had sat up at these words by Dr.Nana the DMO Grantham. He had said what did you say just now? Nana had said that he wanted him to take an Xray. Newton had said no not that what is the other word that you used just now. Nana had said GRAVITY? That set the series of thoughts in Newtons head which led to his enunciating the famous Laws of Gravity.
This is the sort of caramaderie that existed in our batch 50 years ago and is still going strong.

To all batchmates
At the outset, this is response from a non-participant to the recent batch-get-together activities, who has no excuses to offer.
Initially, the responsefrom the Department of Physiology was touching,sincere-a genuineexpression of gratitude, most deserving for an exemplary act of concern forthe needs of the present and future medical students at the institution which nurtured us and released us to the world of professionalism to enable us to water, feed and shelter ourselves and our loved ones. I cannot recall a similar gesture by any batch from Colombo, during the past fifty years.
Without any reservations, I salute those who thought of such a noble gesture re educational facilites, who collected the information re the precise needs, prioritized, proceeded to collect the funds and deliver without the usual 'magul bera' and 'pandals'.
Re the re-union at Habarana, having briefly attended one meeting at Kandy, I am aware of the enthusiasm and the detailed and affectionate manner in which planning for travel, accomodation, festivities and frivolities were made by several individuals, which also included a considerable degree of travel. This I considered was selfless devotion to a task-to regather, reevisit thepast, reminisce and rejopice, which, as to be expected was memorable and enjoyed by all.
Late Ajith Samaranayake wrote " In the lexicon of some Sinhala literary critics who know a little of post-modernism, nostalgia isa dirty word. It is regressive and retrograde and smacks of a futile attempt to return to the past. However, in a darkening and confusing time when so many certainties are crumbling, nostalgia may be the only way to keep sane.-Modified- nostalgia for one's medical school days is a pareticulalrly powerful emotion for it embodies a care-free life-they were the days before one's own eyes were uncomfotable opened to the sordid realities of life"
To all of you , who made all factes of thisre-union a memorable and resounding success-Thank You-for it made me proud to have been a batchmate of you all. Philip, your descriptione of the tributes to those who are no longer with us, made me silently pray that their journeys through samsara be short. Karals

A tale by Tissa.

An incident related by Tissa Kappagoda on 5/7/2010
Tissa was travelling back to Colombo from Habarana after our three day batch 1960 entrants reunion on 4/7/2010. He went to have tea at Ambepussa. A guy walked up to him and introduced himself as the Visiting Obstertrician/Gynaecologist at Mawanella. He wanted to know when the second book written by myself and Tissa would be out. He had read the first book and had identified Tissa by the photograph in the book. Tissa wanted him to contact me. He said that he already had my phone number. This chap was a student of mine who clerked with me at Colombo.

e mail from Dr. Piusha Atapattu, Dept of Physiology, Medical Faculty, Colombo.

Dear Madam
You mjst be having a lovely time at this time with your friends -but I thought I will just write a few words to say thank you. It was a wonderul gesture madam, and it was so lovely to see your batch mates -all so friendly and happy -and coming back to the alma mater and giving us such a lot- it may be a small thing for you but it is a truly big thing for us.We had a strange lovely feeling afterwards- I think the fact that you were together as a batch and enjoying each others company and being able to do do so much made us feel that the future may bring better things for us -even after we retire! We were talking about it the whole day and had a feeling of great joy prevailed (I think I am putting it across badly but it is difficult to describe what we felt taht day I have already given the books to Pharmacology, Biochemistry and paediatrics -and pharnmacology depratment has given me two old books in retuen. Biochemistry promised to do so but I dont think paediatrics can do it as they didnt have a single Nelson with them in the first place! Now do you want the old books back or should I give them to students with the other books you have given me to distribute among students? I thought I will wait for the BNFs to arrive -and then put up a notice for studets who are receiving some sort of financial asisstance to come and get the books -Then there will be at least 50 books altogether and I can let one student have one book so taht as many students as possible will benefit from your gift. Is that alright madam? If I ask them to come now most of them will have to go back disaapointed as only the first 10 students will be able to get a book as I have only about 10 books now.By the way we will purchase the probe for the pH meter on Monday -the agents agreed to bring it and the after calibration we can start offering the acid loading test from next week to pateints -I have already informed the avaialability of this test to the Prof Unit, LRH.I will keep you updated with the spriometer's progress -I was at a visa office the whole of Friday and so we will be able to start operating it only on Monday. Thank you again madam -and may you and your batchmates be blessed with health and happiness. best regards.
Piyusha
