1. The flow of the tides
2. The blow of the wind and its direction
3. The color of the ocean floor
4. The smell of land nearby etc
5. These were handed down as tales and songs from generation to generation.
The Occidentals could navigate the oceans only after the discovery of the Mariner's compass and the Astrolabe.
