Couples shunning traditional wedding gifts in favour of cold hard CASH.


Financial contributions are considered useful because most brides and grooms don't need 'start up' presents. Many write poems in invitations asking for money.

In the 1940/50s in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, presenting gold coins 1/4 or 1/2 Sovereigns to newly married couples was standard practice. Giving cash in sealed envelopes with the name of the donor is standard practice in Sri Lanka nowadays.
