When
the 'Titanic' liner was sinking after hitting an iceberg, on April 15, 1912, there was
chaos on board. The luxury liner's band however played one last time as
the ship was going down. The tune was 'Nearer my God to Thee'. The
Sinhalese epithet 'Nava gillath bang chune' came referring to this
incident.
