Leaders & good judgment

At age 80, what are your expectations?

My 78 Th birthday is quickly approaching so I checked the actuarial tables at social security as I do before every birthday. I want to see how much longer the charts say I have.

Actuarial Life Table

a 78 year old woman statistically has about 11 years of life left.

80 looks very close to me right now. I’m not one to hurry time; I’m pretty philosophical.

But there’s something about 80 that has had an effect on me.

As for expectations -I really don’t “future trip” either. I quit having expectations when I was in an auto accident in 1994 that completely changed my life. I had a lot of hopes, plans and expectations when I was younger but the accident, combined with my husbands death in 2004 angled me away from expectations.

I live a day at a time now. I suspect I’ll continue to live a day at a time in the future.

I live with chronic pain and never know from day to day how I’m going to feel.

Guess I really didn’t answer your question did I?

When Tribalism Goes Bad

Human survival relies on groups, but what if those connections are toxic?

How can we invoke healthy forms of tribalism and lessen bad tribalism? First, recognize that groups built on the foundation of hate, disdain, and anger build those traits in ourselves. With the constant urging of bad tribalism, we stay angry, and that can affect our personal well-being. Second, we can step outside ourselves through empathy and see the world from the view of others. When we use empathy to understand others, we see how we are similar, how we are all human beings. Empathy can broaden our sense of connections to others, and that diminishes bad tribalism.

I think a lot of you aren't aware of the story of this song. The song is about 2 imprisoned soldiers in England, 1 was to be beheaded, the other was sent back to Scotland as a free man. This is why the song goes, "you take the high road and I'll take the low", the low road is what we call being dead sometimes. The high road is over the hills. Then the next line is "and I'll be in Scotland before you" meaning he's going to be in heaven/Scotland. Its about the battle of Culloden in the 1700s. We sing it at weddings, funerals and any chance we can at parties. It's to let the English and the rest of the world know that we will always be free as long as we have Scotland in our hearts

Harry Truman is oft-misquoted as having said “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” Turns out, he wasn’t such a great pet owner—he angered dog lovers around the country when he gave away his puppy named Feller.

Harry Truman who earned the remark “To err is Truman” because of the various mistakes he made.
