"Day-O (The Banana Boat
Song)" is a traditional Jamaican folk song, the best-known version of
which was sung by Harry Belafonte and is the most well-known calypso. It is a
song from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading
bananas onto ships. Daylight has come, the shift is over, and they want their
work to be counted up so that they can go home (this is the meaning of the
lyric "Come, Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana/ Daylight come and we wanna go
home.")
Lyrics of 'Day O'
Day-o, day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day
Me say day, me say day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Work all night on a drink of rum
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Stack banana till de morning come
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Lift six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Six foot, seven foot, eight foot bunch
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day-o
Daylight come and me wan' go home
Day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day
