Sinhala Actor par excellence Vijaya
Nandasiri
The TV tele drama is not complete without Vijaya Nandasiri who passed
away yesterday.
He was I believe from Kegalle. In his school days 1960s his lady
class teacher had told him that one day he would reach the top. (personal
communication).
So he did. And how!
He was among stage actors from his schcool days.
He did the lead role of ‘Undiya’ a village thug in Upali Attanayake and
Dayalal Abeysekera’s play ‘Hetath Api Hamuwemu’ opposite Ranjith Yahinna as the
doctor.
Undiya had two wives, and the city doctor was searching for bliss-made
some to remark that the play was better named ‘ Hetath Api Haminemu’
Well I did the role as Undiya’s subservient villager ‘Ranbanda’.
From then on it was a fast climb acting in most successful plays like
Rankanda, Subha saha Yasa, on to cinema with KAW Perera’s Naedayo as a blind
youth. KAW is the one who gave him this chance.
He was at the top from then on till today!
He would have risen fast anyhow,
but many believe the late Upali Attanayake- another bundle of talent was
his guru-.of course after his class teacher.
Vijay was a minister at court in Simon Navagaththegamuwas land
mark play ‘ Subha saha Yasa’, a masterpiece on Yasalalaka Tissa 60 AD.- the one
who used to act as his own doratupaalaya.
He was on stage- Sarathchandra’s , tele and cinema- all over,
entertaining.
The vast number of his other achievements, do get from the current news.
May He attain Nibbhana.
