Lunugamvehera project, Sri Lanka.

Subject: Emailing: bananas. tissa.
Picture Adjoining Chena, near Tissa,  bananas. 7 Km off Tissa.

The damming of the Kirindi Oya (a river) creating the Lunugam vehera water
scheme, allows water supply twice a year to the area.

This water scheme was commissioned in the 1980s in JRJ's time. Credit to
him.

Rajapakse tried to improve it but gave up as water was insufficient for the
stage 2 of envisioned scheme.

The impression of the older discerning locals is that it has made the
climate better, with more water, rains and greenery allowing two kannas or
harvests. Cannot do three per year.

Right now it is rice harvesting time. Reminds you of popular song,
lilting 'Ranwan karalin pirilaa, wel yaayama pirilaa, Siriya
ramani...ramanee sinaha paalaa' by Susil Premaratne and Latha of 1950s.

Those huge machines harvest paddy and bring out stoneless paddy seeds. All
in one go. Only a few do it all manually.

Machine Cost Rs 12000/ day. Will harvest 10 acres. Millers advance money for
the work.

Paddy sells at Rs 22/Kg, but higher at Rs 32 per Kg to govt if the paddy is
'cleaned' up better. Either way, the farmer is happy.

We bought husked rice at Rs 45 per Kg. In Colombo it is about Rs 60/

In comparison wheat flour is Rs 85 I think. Actually we don't buy it. At
that price it is cheaper to make aappa, roti pittu with rice. And the
prepared mixture is so easy to use.

Wheat flour bread, buns, maalu pang and pastry is yet popular, much mores so
in cities.

So much for the ancient huge PL480 American AID of wheat flour, which kept
our city folk happy and the 'peasants' rushing to Colombo for menial jobs.

The Americans subsided wheat growing.
Now we subsidise rice just as they did wheat. More independent.
Credit to Dudley, Sirima and Mahinda over the decades.

(Cost of a pang gediya is Rs 60/ Weight 335gms only. But in those towns it
is excellent to taste, crispy.)

Of course we shall not ignore the farmers, the rataka balaya!  Mohideen
Baig's deep ' Goviya wey rataka baley, goviya vey!'

Actually they only fought the good battles with the LTTE, hand to hand!
While city folk got the occasional bomb only.

Bill Gates interview - email from jksw

Subject: Bill Gates looking to fill a vacancy

 One of my favourites...

Bill Gates organized an enormous session to recruit a new Chairman for
Microsoft Europe.

5000 candidates assembled in a large room.

One candidate was Sompala Pathirana a Sinhalese living in USA .
Bill Gates thanked all the candidates for coming and asking those who
do not know JAVA programming to leave.

2000 people leave the room.

Soma says to himself, 'I do not know JAVA but I have nothing to lose
if I stay. I'll give it a try' .

Bill Gates asked the candidates who never had experience of managing
more than 100 people to leave.

2000 people leave the room.

Soma says to himself ' I never managed anybody by myself but I have
nothing to lose if I stay. What can happen to me?' So he stays.
Then Bill Gates asked candidates who do not have management diplomas to leave.

500 people leave the room. Soma says to himself, 'I left school at 15
but what have I got to lose?'

So he stays in the room.
Lastly, Bill Gates asked the candidates who do not speak Serbo - Croat to leave.

498 people leave the room.

Soma says to himself, ' I do not speak one word of Serbo - Croat but
what do I have to lose?'

So he stays and finds himself with one other candidate.

Everyone else has gone.

Bill Gates joined them and said

'Apparently you are the only two candidates who have all the required
qualifications & experience I am looking for
and speak Serbo - Croat, so I'd now like to hear you have a
conversation together in that language.'
and......
calmly, Soma turns to the other candidate and says ` Kohomada Machang?
The other candidate answers ' Ammata siri .......... umbath Lankavenda?'

Kos chips after frying. Slice mature kos madulu 1cm thick. No
additions. Deep fry in fresh coconut oil just as potato-French fries.  For a
few minutes just as for chips.

After frying, may add salt, pepper/chillie powder to taste.
Eat. As tasty or better than French fries.
Lion Lager goes swell with it.

Can make pota'chips companies go bankrupt.
Secret.
Lastly wipe mouth with kos poththa- use the prickly surface.
jksw

P.S. Variation that I have not tried-frying the ripe madulu-waraka. Jaffna
people could  try this out.

Art - Adolf Hitler - email from Lakshman Karalliedde

He was probably rejected because he came from a poor family and was not the traditional blonde and blue eyed person of his era.

A young man's dream to be an artist was crushed when his application to enter the fine arts academy was rejected .... His crushed dream turned into a tragic nightmare for the world........ He painted these pictures.

The person who painted these pictures wanted to attend the Viennese academy of
Fine arts and become famous as an artist.
If he had been accepted by the academy, the world’s history could have been different.
His name was Adolph Hitler.
