My daughter Queenie, Consultant Anaesthetist at the Base Hospital, Avissawella, Sri Lanka related this story to me. She was anaesthetising a 73 year old patient being treated for a hypertension, who was to undergo surgery for an inguinal hernia. The patient was by profession a seller of gold hailing from Karawanella. He had a large scar going from the epigastrium towards his left loin. He told my daughter that the scar was a result of an operation done 50 years ago by Dr. Bartholomews, who took out a 3 lbs tumor After recovering from the surgery the Surgeon had told him that even his son will never die easily. No wonder the charm of 'Batho' lingered on all these years.
