email from Lawrence Ratnam

Dear all
Since I would not be able to be at the get together I have kept a low profile but have followed the correspondence closely. and I admire the enthusiasm. But as Dawood and Nana have pointed out The Sri Lankan doctors Association in UK has been providing journals and books to all the medical faculties in Sri Lanka in fairly substantial amounts for well over 25 years. This I know having been the founder treasurer.
I do not want to discourage what is being done. Carry on with the venture

Kind regards,

Dear Dawood
Thanks for your support and concerns.
If there is a will there is a way. Hope this is still true and our collective response should prove it either way.

ana,
Sorry I didn't point this out earlier,
100 X 200 = 20,000 and NOT 200,000.!!
200 !! being the size of the batch,
The expected donation per head would
be in the region of 1000 X 200 !! = 200,000
Do you think this would be a realistic number to work with !
The Jaya bookshop quotation for the books required by the Librarian
is 64,000/=.,
this is the approximate cost per couple for the Habarana
get together!!
it works out to about Rs. 300/= per person ifor a batch of 200 assuming 100% participation
I hope this would help keep matters in perspective
Please correct me if I am wrong!
Dawood

Dear Nana,
I am glad that you have resurrected this issue. I am also aware that the UK doctors Group donates a certain amount annually to the College.I am sure that you are a major activist in that venture.
I'll be happy to support you on this issue , although , I can see major issues in initiating and sustaining such a project.
Wish You Luck
Best Regards
Dawood

Dear Philip

I have read with great interest the various responses on our initial suggestion- to show our gratitude and appreciation and to help Colombo Medical Faculty as a Group collectively.

Since Nalini (after lot of efforts) shared the list of books & journals which are of short supply and giving the details of costs and the quantity required, the comments seem to have dried up.

I agree we must provide upto date editions/copies with sustained plans for the provisions of future up dates ( ideally). Other alternatives like electronic media facility could also be explored.

Books and journals appear to be one that seem to be popular. The opportunity for provision of sponsorship funds( relevant details were provided through the efforts of Dawood) was not much commented on.

I still feel passionately that it is time we act and act together & collectively on a suitable project which should be initiated by the ‘1960 medical Batch’. The initial target date could be on the 2nd or 3rd July for the grand presentation.

we could plan with the help of a small dedicated group based in Sri Lanka who can represent all of us as to what our target would be and how we can formulate an effective, successful and a pragmatic project for all of us to be proud of.

Can I suggest a very modest target of say £150,000.00 as one off donation towards a very worthy cause- may be library updates and/or sponsorship Fund. Even if each one of us gives a minimum of £100.00(absolutely optional and preferably anonymous), we should be able to raise £200,000.

Let the Organisers decide on a working Group of say 3-5 dedicated and enthusiastic colleagues from Sri Lanka. We would be very happy to support.

These efforts should not exclude those who still want to make any individual donations to any worthy cause.

We have app. 3 months to finalise the details and to raising the funds. We have had enough comments which have been most helpful. Let's show our dedication, Unity and commitment by action.

Best wishes for a very successful outcome

Nana

emails from Karals and Buddy.

1. Kapu has consented- Assa is writing on coconuts, I have fulfilled all tasks by being a pest! We could not have had a better presentation than that by Buddy on Murali. Philipo, your blog site on Sri Lanka is super-well done. Karals

2. Hello Nalini,

I would like to make a presentation at the clinical meeting entitled
"The applied anatomy and biomechanics of Muralidharan's bowling arm."
I would need a microphone, amplifier, loudspeaker and a CD PLAYER which could be attached to the amplifier.

Here is my abstract -

In 1995 Umpire Darrel Hair no-balled Muralidharan 6 times for throwing during the Boxing Day Test Match between Sri Lanka and Australia. A Sri Lankan born surgeon who witnessed this event and who was from the 1960 batch was called upon to medically examine Muralidharan's right arm and the legality of his bowling action as he was a medico-legal examiner for the Victorian Workcover Board.

Today's presentation is a description of the biomechanics of the bowling action and the reasons for the optical illusion resulting in the "No Ball" call.

P.S
I am doing this because I am being pestered by Karals.

Hey Karals,
As you are now a world famous figure, I hope you would be producing something really poisonous at the clinical meeting.
Buddy
