What went through my mind was the poem Rudyard Kipling wrote
about an earlier Afghan war, The Young British Soldier, and in particular, its
final verse:
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Not much had changed in Afghanistan in the past 150 years.
