A few antiques on display at the Mount Lavinia Hotel, Sri Lanka.

A beautiful piece of woodwork on a panel.

Wooden 'almyrah' with brass fittings.

It is claimed by some historians that carpentry in its finer form, as in making furniture, was introduced to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese who arrived in the Island in 1505. It is hard to believe this claim as the art forms produced in stone, a much harder material, have been in existence in Sri Lanka at least a millennium before the Portuguese arrived. I saw these exhibits in the lobby of the Mount-Lavinia Hotel, Galkissa.
