Colonial Influences On The Modern Sinhala Language



The Portuguese.
The only foreigners from Europe who married and settled in this country. Portuguese as they are in Portugal today too are not a fair skinned race.

Do read.. it is very interesting.  Don't quite agree with the pic of Dona Catherina in Kandy with the pagoda-type buildings in the background....
Also can add a lot more- like almariya, istoppuwa, padiya, verandah etc

One of the best I recall is the idiom 'NAVA GILLATH BAN CHUNE' - This refers to the sinking of the Titanic and how the band on board the sinking ship played the melody - Tune - of 'Nearer my God to thee', a Christian hymn.
