When I have been in the Northern & Eastern province that's only couple of times I got the taste of it.
I think the Roti (similar to thin pan cake) used - is Muslim in origin
P.S.In the year 1972 when I was Resident Surgeon in the General Hospital, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, I came across 'Kothu Roti' in a Muslim shop in the heart of the town. It was a big draw - high in cholesterol as it had eggs and beef - among the locals. The outlet was identified by the infernal noise of the two hand operated metal cutters working on a heated metal plate. It has become so popular in present Sri Lanka that there is no place where you cannot get it.
