Swallowing caustic soda, accdentally.

PS
I had an acid burn patient who gave a similar story. This happened at the Elephant House bottling plant site in Sri Lanka. The patient, a driver in a delivery van had gone to pick up a load of aerated water. He was thirsty and had seen a bottle of what he thought was water inside a bottle on a table near where he parked his van inside the factory premises. He had taken the bottle and had gulped in a mouthful of the 'water'.
It happened to be caustic soda. He was rushed to the hospital. He ended up with a stricture - narrowing, of his oesophagus - gullet. We did surgery in our unit at the NHSL, Colombo, to repair  this.
