email from Buddy

Hello Bernard and others,
Should we bring books suitable for MBBS level or will post graduate level books, for instance operative surgery books be acceptable?

Dear Nana, & everyone else,
Yes, the committee decided on having an "academic session" this time too.
There were many suggestions that it shouldnt be too long & too boring - so please make the topics as relevant and interesting as possible. Time allocation would be 10-15 mins each.
So do please send in your topics & a very short abstract if possible. Thanks.

Dear All
Thank you so much for the information you have provided. Sidney and I were in Sri Lanka on 26th and were hoping to come to Duru's to the meeting but unable to as the College of Psychiatrists meeting didn't allow us enough time to attend the meeting. Sidney was presenting and I was chairing so it was difficult to get away.
The suggestions you have made are very good. We are happy to contribute to the bar.
We will contact the email address given re: transport to Habarana.
Very best wishes.

Books

New,old,used or still very useful

Are available

Your effort ,my dear,kind friends,

Which was my priviledge ,to be associated,

From the time we were children.

Some of them fromgrade 3 or 4[3rd class as we called it then, but really first class people, who made my life and that of countless others,

So happy

Content,

Gave there time ,money,,knowledge ,guidance,

So freely and for so long

Many of us started our first clinical exposure in 1960[remember Prfessor Milroy Paul,,one of the many great teachers who guided us,

And made us better for having had the priviledge to be associated]

He recognized my voice, when I went to see him, after he lost his sight[and I was not as close to him as many other ,more priviledged colleagues were]

From the list[and also outside the list]

Please help us to find out what we ca obtain in Sri Lanka too[our newly liberated hela nation of Lankans, with a continuing common heritage]

I bought a copy of Apleys System of orthopedic[at one tine there were 3 of us,in his program at Rowley Bristow/St Peters, Chertsey ,Surrey, where the primary FRCS course was conducted]

This book is affordable and good.

What is the cost of the available books in Colombo?

We can look ito the new or even used[current]books and share in the total cost[it could be an uneven sharing]

Many books ,procedures do not get old, just modified.

Eg CTS,is still mostly done the same way we were taught at ZRowley Bristow.

Hip,knee replacements,changed very little,

Back surgery,fusion,is hardy any different

HHH,hydeocoele, hernia, hemorrhoids, hardly different

But abdominal surgery, without the huge incisions, are different,

But the vision is great,

Many discharged the same or the next day,.

Psychiatry, forensic psychiatry has changed ,enormously,

With the ability to treat, control,

And cure ,many new disease entities,

That we could not do anything but manage symptom control,30-45 yrs ago.

Yet some of the psychiatric/psychological manifestations ,have not changed much

And their joint application, has reduced the morbidity, mortality, duration of the agonizing recovery much less,

And in more compliant cases,

Ability to keep people functioning, longer than ever before.

Many suggestions re computer,internet,

Electronic teaching,learning,

Understanding the new research, and their application,

Would definitely help.

The comments and changes made are allapprpriate

And should be incorporated, where ever possible.

We are dealing with the greatest input of medical, and specialixed knowledge,

Probably never before available in our recent past.

We can continue to do this as long as healt,

And other factors permit.

If my friends in the USA or Canada

Feels they have books[age really does not matter,if our friends feel they can be useful]

It can be collecyed here,in Cincinnati

And I will forward them

Or do via one of the Embasssy locations[we bear the cost]

But let us make it not too big.

We will decide on the address,

It could be mine

3475 vista av

Cincinnati

Ohio 45208

Or the Washington or LA embassy location

Lake house and other lankan location ,could be tapped locally and the list forwarded.

Magazines are not outdated, even after several years.

I had the americal journal of Psychiatry

And Psychiatry news

From 1969,

But can use the last 2-4 yrs[hopw I can locate them all]

Please check the local special editions for Asia

Available at Lake house and other places.

Please list the prices,

From the local shops, new and used.

This idea would be more expedient.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have forwarded the list to several sources,

Including buying a couple my self, if the editions are outdated

If local prices are low,[I found many to be]

Then it makes no sense in buying those abroad.

Dear Nalini
I am very pleased and overjoyed to note the interest and the enthusiasm shown by some of our colleagues towards the initiative we proposed in helping our Medical Faculty in various ways.
I would wait to hear more and more thoughts and ideas over the next few weeks and would make few comments afterwards.
I am writing this to you get information on another issue.
Could you please let me know if you are organising an 'academic session' like what you did previously.
If you do and if you have not got enough participants, I would like to make a brief presentation on a very unusual professional experience I had as a consultant paediatrician.
My experience is that this type of Events would have serious implications on the practising clinicians.
I could present some of the relevant practical points and 'lessons to be learnt' which may be of interest to any practising clinician.
Please let me know your thoughts.
Very best wishes
Nana

Appreciate very much all the hard work that is being put in by the committee. Do you have a choice for those who do not wish to wear Sarong and redda/ hatte?
