Many thanks for the batch get together organising committee meeting report.
It sounds really exciting.
If I may, I would like to ask as to why we have decided on 1950's music for the sing-along, rather than 1960's, the latter being the time we were in medical school.
Whilst 50's music is nice, 60's was also very nice. Perhaps a mixture?
We shall look forward very much indeed to this get together.
With love and very best wishes,
Ranjini and Daya

Dear orgnisers,
I totally agree with Hema. Developments in medicine are changing so fast, books become obsolete in no time. It's not worth therefore shipping old editions of text books considering the shipping costs. Each of us should be able to donate a new text . These could be bought in Colombo avoiding the shipping charges.
Why not make the required book list in the format of a "wedding gift list", adn e.mail the list to everyone so that each one can tick off what they wish to donate.
I have thought of donating a copy of Davidson's Principles & Practice of Medicine , which I can buy in Sarasavi book shop Dehiwala.
Kind regards to everyone.

Hi All,

Having watched the ongoing discussion re Text Books, I wonder how useful older texts in various specialities would be to practicing medicine in the current environment. As the Texts get new Editions so frequently with the advances that are occurring every day, and the changing formularies, would the electronic media be a better substitute?

I believe that Old text books are better than nothing, but let us at least plan to stock the library with newer editions so they appear to at least provide somewhat newer information.

Sincerely

Hema

Thanks for the list

Noticed Bailey and Love

I have the old copy,autographed,by several ,

And also used by my nephew for his primary FRCS[now at Moorefields]

But there are several books on psychiatry,

Which pharmaceutical companies are the most active in sri lanka?

Please send your list, I will reach them via the regional managers,

And with direct contact, with the local managers.

Shall forward it to many try to get the best response.

If a local request is needed to back up and also mail

Any books,magazines,

Which addreses can we use as reference/

Still ,cannot fail to observe that british system, though much out dated

Still appears to be having a firm hold.

In psychiatry,

They are way below the new standards,

Including the classification of diseases, and DSM 4,dsm 4 tr,

And the new proposed dsm 5.

Can we in some way keep the local practioners, and specialists,

Updated with the new methods, new diagnostic criteria,

And better treatment outcone,

Than to lag behind with the old teachings of the old masters?

Maybe we can change it if we try.

Will it obstruct the advancement of local graduates,

Within the health dept[still the only and sot powerful employer]

Dear all,
Many of us seemed to have liked the simple & easy idea of bringing a book - a gift from the past to the present day medicos!
Suji had requested a list of books needed - so that we dont all bring the same ones! So here's a list I got from the students.
Please note that they don't have to be brand new - but of course the editions shouldnt be too far outdated.
Also you neednt stick to the list - we know there are a lot of lovely books out there that the students dont know of - but should!
The formulary is in big demand & copies a few years old are acceptable.

Bailey and Love's Short practice of Surgery - 6 copies
Davidson's Principles and practice of Medicine - 3 copies
Kumar and Clark - Clinical Medicine - 3 copies
Textbook of Obstetrics - Dutta - 5 copies
Textbook of Gynaecology - Dutta - 5 copies
Gynaecology by ten teachers - Monga - 5 copies
Obstetrics by ten teachers - Monga - 5 copies
Crash course in Psychiatry - 5 copies
Psychiatry - Oxford core texts - 5 copies
ICD 10 Classification of mental and behavioural disorders - WHO - 5 copies
Nelson's textbook of Paediatrics - 1 copy
Grant's Atlas of Anatomy - 3 copies
Gray's Anatomy for students - 3 copies
British National Formularies - about 15 copies
250 cases in Clinical Medicine - R.R.Baliga
